The Lodge at Big Falls

In February of this year, good friends of ours prepared to leave for an annual trip to work at Toledo Christian
Academy in Belize for a week.

As my family and I sat in church and listened to them share about what they were going to do, a feeling of envy swept over me. Our son Aaron leaned over and whispered in my ear, "Mom when are we going to go back? I will sell my Wii to get a plane ticket." All I could do is try and explain again, that it was not the time for us to go. I reminded them that we had to wait for an open door or an opportunity that seemed right.

Within the week, we had been contacted by a couple that we met during the time we lived in Belize. What our friends in Belize wanted to know is if we would be able to travel to Big Falls and stay at their property so that they could go to England to see their daughter graduate from college.

Rob and Marta operate a small eco-resort in Big Falls, located about 11 miles from the school that we taught at. When we lived in Belize, we would often take day trips over to the Lodge to swim in their pool or stay in their cabanas that were much cooler than our home. Our visits to the Lodge changed as our friendship deepened and we began to tell one another about our families, our perspective on spiritual matters and politics.

In two short days our family will be taking off on that familiar 6:00 am flight to Belize. Our son Andrew was all set to join us until he landed a new job that keeps him traveling to the east coast for extended periods of time. There is no questions that Andrew's absence will be great, but we trust that this is not his time to go back.

I wanted to write this blog so that Andrew could jump on line from wherever he is and catch up on on where we are. I also wanted to keep a journal of our time, share photos, and our experiences with our family and friends who know how much our living in Belize impacted and changed us. We hope you enjoy the blog, perhaps it will plant a seed that one day you may be able to venture down and visit a place that is exciting, sometimes dangerous, mysterious and always unforgettable.
